The Ministry of Health pays special attention to the prevention of injuries, especially since injuries and the severity of their medical and social consequences are largely determined by the behavior of the person himself. The problem of injuries at this stage is especially acute and justified. As a cause of death, injuries, poisoning and other influences of external factors over the past fifteen years have been in third place after diseases of the cardiovascular system and cancer. Every year in the Republic of Belarus more than 750 thousand residents are injured, of which about 120 thousand are children.
Accidents, poisonings and suicides are the main causes of death for people of working age, especially men. More than four thousand people die every year in the republic as a result of murders and suicides. Suicide, as a cause of death, came out on top in the Vitebsk region.
Over the past ten years, the number of cases of accidental alcohol poisoning leading to death has doubled.
92% of injuries are not related to work, of which 50% of victims suffered from domestic injuries, 23% from street injuries, 2% from transport injuries, 2% from sports, and 2% from school injuries.
In the structure of injuries, industrial injuries amounted to 8%. At work, men are injured 3 times more often and die 15 times more often than women. The main cause of accidents at work is the malfunction of machines and mechanisms, due to which a quarter of all injuries occur, non-compliance with safety regulations, and being drunk at the workplace.
Injuries are one of the main causes of permanent disability.
There are numerous injuries received by children on the street during pedestrian traffic, accidental falls and due to the poor condition of sidewalks, bridges, underground passages, injuries from objects falling from a height (window glass, icicles, etc.).
The main reason for the death and injury of people on the roads is their negligent attitude towards compliance with traffic rules.
Injuries caused by vehicles have a small share, but they are the most severe, almost all require hospitalization and are the main cause of disability and mortality.
The causes of school injuries are blows from hard objects (briefcases, backpacks, textbooks, etc.), falls on stairs and a flat surface due to pushing, substituting a “leg”, collisions while running, etc., pinching of fingers by doors, window frames, malfunction of school sports equipment, etc.
The data presented indicate the particular relevance of the problem of injuries in modern society, since injuries have a direct impact on the state of health, full-fledged life activity, and working ability of the population. In many ways, the level of injury depends on each of us paying close attention to our own health.
