The annual republican information and educational campaign “Belarus against tobacco” has become a good tradition. This year it is held from May 11 to June 5.
Smoking is a widespread bad habit. It is a pity that people forget about the serious risk of developing a wide range of diseases associated with smoking. To date, a lot of evidence has accumulated indicating a close connection between the increase in the number of smokers and the increase in the incidence of cancer, cardiovascular and other diseases.
Tobacco contains nicotine, a substance that causes drug addiction and is characterized by an obsessive, irresistible craving for consumption. In addition to nicotine, tobacco smoke contains several dozen toxic and carcinogenic substances.
There is increasing evidence that so-called passive or forced smoking (inhalation of air contaminated by tobacco smoke) contributes to the development of diseases in non-smokers that are characteristic of smokers. To date, the connection between passive smoking and heart disease, lung cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (bronchial asthma, bronchitis) has been proven.
For most people who smoke regularly, smoking is not an indulgence or just a habit, but a disease called tobacco addiction. Almost everyone can get rid of tobacco addiction, but this must be done according to the rules, and even better, on the recommendation of doctors who are familiar with methods of treating tobacco addiction. Quitting smoking not only restores well-being and increases the functionality of the body, but also reduces the risk of developing many chronic non-infectious diseases, including malignant neoplasms.
As part of the campaign, Days of open information and consultation of the population on smoking prevention issues will be organized in medical institutions of the city and district.
I would like to recommend that the heads of organizations and institutions of all forms of ownership provide measures of moral and material incentives for employees who quit smoking and lead a healthy lifestyle.
Remember, the fight against smoking is a fight for the health of not only smokers, but also the people around them, that is, a fight for the health of the entire society.
