Energy drinks (colloquially energy drinks, energy tonics) are drinks that emphasize their ability to stimulate the human central nervous system and/or have an antisedative effect.
Drinks contain tonic substances, most often caffeine, and other stimulants: theobromine and theophylline (cocoa alkaloids), which are also homologues of caffeine, as well as often vitamins as an easily digestible source of energy - carbohydrates (glucose, sucrose), adaptogens, etc. The caffeine content in energy drinks varies from 218.6 mg/l to 321 mg/l.
An energy drink is a medium or highly carbonated drink (contains a large amount of carbonic acid (H2CO3), as this promotes faster absorption of components and a faster onset of effect, on the one hand, and on the other hand, it is used for the safe preservation of the product.
There are three main theories about the effects of caffeine on performance:
1. Stimulation of the central nervous system. Caffeine may reduce the perception of exertion by increasing the speed of nerve impulse transmission and increasing the contraction of muscle fibers, thus allowing muscles to more easily engage in work.
2. Increased strength of muscle contractions: caffeine, by affecting cellular ion transport, improves the flow of sodium and potassium to working muscles and the transfer of calcium into them.
3. Caffeine may increase fat utilization and reduce carbohydrate intake. It leads to an increase in adrenaline levels in the blood both during rest and during exercise, which consequently mobilizes free fatty acids from fatty or intramuscular triglycerides. The presence of increased free fatty acids reduces carbohydrate intake, liver glycogen breakdown and glycogen depletion and thus improves endurance performance.
ADVANTAGES OF ENERGY DEVICES
• lift your spirits and stimulate mental activity
• contain vitamins and glucose
• act within 3-4 hours
• convenient packaging
DISADVANTAGES OF ENERGY DEVICES
• maximum dose: 2 cans per day
• an energy tonic only opens the way to the body’s reserves; it does not carry energy itself
• leads to exhaustion of the nervous system
• contraindicated in patients with heart disease, hyper- and hypotension
• can cause arrhythmia, tachycardia, seizures
• in case of overdose they cause psychomotor disorders, increased nervousness, depression • many components of energy tonics exceed the permissible daily dose.
RULES FOR USE
• drink no more than two cans of drink per day
• do not drink energy drinks after exercising
• when the effect of the drink wears off, the body needs rest
• caffeine has a half-life of 5 hours, so you should not consume additional caffeinated beverages during this time.
• do not mix with alcohol to avoid hypertensive crisis
