Every second, all over the world, people of all ages and backgrounds are in need of blood transfusions for life-saving reasons.
World Blood Donor Day received official status as an annual event in 2005 by decision of the World Health Assembly. World Blood Donor Day is organized by the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Society of Blood Transfusion and the International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations.
Donor comes from the Latin “donare” - “to give”. An adult can lose about a liter of blood without danger to his life. At the blood transfusion station - 400 ml. This amount of blood is restored by the body very quickly. Donating blood is also useful! At the same time, the body’s endocrine and immune systems receive a powerful stimulus to work. It has been noticed that people who donate blood for a long time are not susceptible to colds and flu, and are less likely to suffer from cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Donation also has a beneficial effect on a person’s mental health. Without harming your health, you can donate blood no more than 4 times a year (for women) and no more than 5 times a year (for men) with an interval of two months.
World Blood Donor Day is an opportunity to show appreciation to people who voluntarily donate their blood. The problem of donating blood and its components is one of the most important for the state and key for domestic healthcare. The very possibility and quality of providing high-tech medical care in peacetime and in emergency situations depends on its solution.
Every year, donors donate more than 81 million 450-milligram units of blood around the world. However, despite these figures, for many patients around the world, blood transfusions are either unaffordable or carry enormous risks. Eight out of ten people in need around the world cannot access safe blood donations.
Safe blood is the nation's greatest natural resource.
Each year on World Blood Donor Day, many countries hold national events to draw international attention to the critical shortage of safe blood donations and the importance of blood donation. Every year the number of countries joining this movement is growing.
WHO encourages everyone who can donate blood to save one or more lives.
