Avian influenza is a highly contagious infectious disease caused by the avian influenza virus, which affects all species of birds and has acquired the ability to infect people.
The reservoir for avian influenza viruses is waterfowl. Wild birds can serve as carriers of this infection. Of the domestic species, chickens and turkeys are the most sensitive. The disease in humans begins with chills, a temperature of 38º C or higher, and muscle pain. Then a cough, shortness of breath, hard breathing, wheezing occurs, acute renal failure may develop, and mortality reaches 50 - 80%.
Prevention measures:
- do not purchase poultry and poultry products (eggs, meat, fluff and others) from places of unauthorized trade;
- on reservoirs and in resting areas of migratory birds, it is necessary to avoid contact with it, do not touch it with your hands, and do not feed it by hand;
- if you find a dead bird (wild or domestic), do not touch it under any circumstances, and do not allow pets near it. They can be carriers of infection. Stop unauthorized persons from accessing the yard. Immediately inform the emergency departments by phone 01, the veterinary service or the elder of the locality, the center of hygiene and epidemiology;
- it is prohibited to eat meat and eggs of sick or dead poultry and wild birds; - poultry meat must be thoroughly cooked;
- do not eat raw or undercooked chicken eggs, and wash them with soap and water before cooking;
- thoroughly wash kitchen equipment that was used when cutting poultry;
- do not put prepared food in dishes where raw meat was placed;
- After handling eggs and meat, wash your hands thoroughly with soap. Follow these recommendations and stay healthy!
